Living in Cyprus

Hello!

I’m Jackie and I moved from the UK to Cyprus in 2006. What a journey it has been since then.
My husband and I bought an old villa to renovate – it was a HUGE project. We finally finished this a year ago and put it up for sale. It went from a run down wreck to a stunningly beautiful property. With going through the trials and tribulations of buying and living in Cyprus myself I thought that I would write a blog every week in the hope that I would be able to help other people along their journey or, at the least, offer some amusing stories!

I know that at the moment many people can’t sell their property in Cyprus. So in the coming weeks I will be sharing some hints and tips to help you along the way if you are currently up for sale. We’ve just sold and moved – unlike some of our friends and neighbours, whose properties are still up for sale 4 years on.

In the meantime, there are so many stories to share with you from our time of being “For Sale”. For instance, the prospective buyers from the UK with the kids from hell who tried to wreck our villa on their viewing – and the parents just let them! Then, the Cypriot from the army who just turned up in his dirty boots and expected to be shown round – I’m very house-proud and there was no way that was going to happen!

But this one is the icing on the cake. An elderly couple viewed 5 times (we thought the deal was done) and they even asked to lie down on the beds to see if they would be comfortable! It turns out they were professional “viewers”, just getting agents to take them round properties, wine and dine them and then buy nothing. Believe me, this is the tip of the iceberg - we’ve experienced it all.

Next week, I’ll start to tell you how we managed to achieve 78 viewings in 12 months, almost sold our villa 7 times – then on the 8th it finally paid off – but not without plenty of heartache along the way. Tune in next week; I’ll look forward to telling you more then.
